All cats have behavioral needs, certain requirements that we as owners need to provide for. An outdoor cat will hunt, stalk, run, jump, hide, explore and climb. These activities keep your cat fit and active both physically and mentally. This is why your indoor cat needs to have some cat toys.
Indoor cats present us with a problem. There is little to occupy a cat inside, boredom can set in and before long your cat may become lethargic. Over time this can lead to a gain in weight followed by obesity and eventually health problems like diabetes can surface. The answer isn’t too difficult though….
As cat owners, it is our responsibility to provide the means for mental stimulus and physical activity that a cat needs. The best cat toys do not have to be expensive, there are things you can use in your home that make excellent interactive cat toys.
Cat Toys For Indoor Cats
Some ideas for free interactive cat toys are:
Use a ping pong ball – My kitchen has a tiled floor and the introduction of a ping pong ball stars all sort of chasing and pouncing games. One swipe of my cats paw sends the ball off in another direction and the hunt begins again.
A cardboard box – Cats are very inquisitive and a cardboard box is something a cat can climb into and explore. My cat also enjoys playing peek-a-boo with me while in a box.
Use a laser pointer – Cats love bright shiny things that scoot across the floor and over the chairs, let the chase begin!
Paper bags – Similar to the box idea, try tapping the bag with your finger when your cat is inside. Watch your fingers though. Don’t use plastic bags of course.
A feather – Any long feather will do, just drag it across the floor near your cat and see what happens. It’s safer for you if the feather is on the end of a stick.
All those ideas are free and easy to use. Try spending a little bit of time a couple of times a day with your cat using one of these activities.
There are loads of interactive cat toys you can buy. Some of those are very good, but there is one thing that I always recommend buying….
Cat Trees or Cat Tree Condos
Cat trees and cat condos are basically cat climbing frames and there are many cool designs. They provide a way for indoor cats to be active, tone their muscles, climb, run and jump without wrecking your furniture. They also provide a place for your cat to scratch and maintain his/her paws.
